Will A Conscious Intention Improve Your Pool Playing?

Ernie Reynolds asked:
Will a conscious intention improve your pool playing?
I think it will. I know it does for me and others I have given this suggestion to. And I believe it will do the same for you.
I usually play pool on Friday nights. So, when I wake up on Friday morning I say to myself, “I intend to play excellent pool tonight.” I think it with conviction and with the belief that it is a true statement. And it usually comes true.
I do this first thing in the morning because, at that time, the mind is not fully into conscious mode yet. That small interval between being asleep and fully awake is the ideal time to make mental suggestions such as this. The intention to play pool well goes directly to the subconscious mind - that part of the mind that really controls our lives.
It would be similar to meditate to a very relaxed state and then intend to play your best pool. Or, have a hypnotist place you into a deep trance state and give you the post-hypnotic suggestion that you will now play the best pool of your life. When the mind and body are very relaxed the subconscious mind is more accessible and better able to take suggestions such as these.
As well as being a long-time pool player, I am a student of the mind. I have studied various philosophies about how the mind works and how it affects our daily living. I am certainly convinced that the mind and our outlook on life affect our health and well-being, as well as our pool playing.
A person who generally thinks positive, uplifting thoughts will certainly get more out of life than a person who is stuck in negativity and thinks the world is an unfair, depressing place. Although the world has a way of throwing curves at us, out thoughts and attitudes can make the difference between wanting to get up in the morning and grumbling our way out of bed.
One of my favorite sayings is, “Thoughts Become Things.” If you really think about this you will see that it is true. Any thing that mankind has created has first been a thought in someone’s mind. It couldn’t come about any other way.
If you see yourself as a good pool shooter, and really visualize it in your mind, eventually it will be so. Of course you need to put your time in on the pool table to learn the game and practice. But, with the right mindset and a firm intention, it will happen much faster and you will enjoy the game a heck of a lot more.
Another very helpful intention for playing pool could be “I intend to concentrate fully on the game.” If you have played much pool I’m sure you know that if you are not concentrating on the game at hand, you will not play your best pool. Pool is not a physically hard game, but it does take pretty intense concentration to avoid missing easy shots and playing up to your potential.
It has been said many times that pool is a “mental game.” Once you have the basics down and know your way around the pool table, whether you win or lose depends very much on your mental state. If you are in a relaxed state of mind and enjoying yourself you will play better. If you have things on your mind that are bothering you, you won’t play your best.
So, since most of us like to win when we play a game of pool, why not give yourself the best chance of wining? As an experiment, take a few seconds to make an intention to play excellent pool the next morning when you know you will be playing that day. You have nothing to lose and you may be pleasantly surprised at how well you play. Leave a comment on my blog and let me know if it worked for you - http://Pool-Is-Cool.com.
Thoughts become things. Make a thought of intention to play the best pool of your life the next time you hit the table. I’m willing to bet you will!
