Pool Table Accessories Make Great Gifts For The Pool Player In Your Life

Monday, August 24th, 2009
MJ Marks asked:

One great thing about hobbies is that they give you instant gift ideas. When we were first married, my husband was really into wood working, so I always knew that for a birthday or Christmas, I could easily make him happy with a power tool. But last year he developed a new hobby: playing pool. Funny enough, it developed because of his woodworking. He came across and old pool table where the playing surface was in good condition, but the wood needed a lot of help. He refinished the top and built new legs (the old ones had been used as a chew toy for a very big dog!), and with a beautiful new finish it now looks great in our family room. But you also need pool table accessories to play pool, unless of course, you plan to just use if for your model train set like Hector in Monarch of the Glen!

Some pool tables already come with some basic items (like balls), others you order everything separately so that you can fully customize your experience. There are a few pool table accessories that are an absolute must, some which you need but can get by without when in a pinch, and others that are just extras.

Some of the accessories that you must have include billiard balls and cues (though if desperate, you can play around by rolling the ball with your hand). Pool balls obviously come in a wide range of prices that reflects a range of quality and materials from which the balls are made. Besides the standard set, you can get some that are fancier, others for playing in black light (how cool is that?) as well as other types of sets for playing snooker or carom. When it comes to cues, what can I say? They range in price from $20 to hundreds of dollars, so choose accordingly.

Some pool table accessories that you need, but can do without in a pinch would include chalk for your cue (some say this is a must!), a triangle (or diamond) for racking the balls (way easier than carefully placing the balls by hand and one by one), and perhaps a bridge for those more difficult shots (totally optional by many, indispensable by others). All of these come in different varieties, including chalk, which you can get in purple or orange besides just the standard blue. Racks come in plastic or a range of wood types, and bridges also come in a variety of styles and materials.

Other pool table accessories are smart to help protect your investment. These items include table covers to protect from dust and spills, and brushes to clean, and therefore, extend the life of the playing surface. You can get brushes for the bed of the pool table, and others for under the rail. A cue rack or holder is also very good to keep your cues organized and in good condition. These truly come in a large variety of sizes and makes, so you can easily find one that suits your personality and pool room decor.

Then come the fun pool table accessories, things that personalize your pool playing experience and that can make it more fun. These can range from small chalk holders and pool gloves to billiard ball cases for storing the balls to great billiard lights for above your table and clocks and neon signs for your wall.

Of course there is a large variety of pool related clothing, books and helpful DVDs to keep a pool enthusiast covered for years worth of gifts. And when I run out of ideas and my husband has all of the pool table accessories that he could possible need? Well, maybe by then he will have a new hobby.

Bumper Pool Tables

Friday, August 21st, 2009
Michiel Van Kets asked:

Bumper pool is a game played by two people or 4. If 4 people are playing they get into teams of 2 and take turns. Bumper pool rules may vary depending on where and who you play.

Basic bumper pool rules start with arranging the balls. The game has 10 balls (5 for each player or team), 5 red and 5 white. Each set of red and white balls have a marked ball which is called the cue ball. The bumper pool table has pockets on each end and bumper pads around the center.

The bumper pool table is set by placing 2 balls on each side of the pocket and putting the cue ball directly in front of it. Both players shoot the cue ball simultaneously by hitting the side rails and trying to get their ball close to or inside the pocket at the other end of the bumper pool table. The player or team who gets the closest or sinks their cue ball first gets the next shot, following the same procedure above for the cue ball. The other player has to continue trying to get their cue ball in before moving on.

If both players get their cue balls in the pocket at the same time on the 1st try, they will follow the same procedure with an unmarked ball as they did with the cue ball. If a player hits in another ball before their cue ball, the opponent may remove two of their own balls and drop them in their own pocket.

If a player makes a ball leave the bumper pool table, the opponent can place the ball anywhere they want on the table and depending on the house rules may be able to remove two of their own balls and place them in their own pocket. A player can help a player get closer to winning the game if they shot their own ball into their opponents pocket or jump balls or bumpers giving the opponent a chance to remove two of their balls and place them in their pocket. However, if a player knocks his opponent’s ball into his opponent’s pocket, no penalty is given. The first player to get rid of all their balls wins the game.

Bumper pool tables are similar to ordinary pool tables except they have two pockets instead of six and they have bumpers toward the middle of the table. Many people consider bumper pool to be more challenging because the bumpers can alter the direction and location of where you want the ball to go. The average table has 4 bumpers but it can also have 14 or 16. The pockets have 2 bumpers surrounding each and the other bumpers only leave enough room for the ball to get between.

Bumper pool is definitely a game that can be played and enjoyed by everyone, young and old. It provides a challenge and endless hours of entertainment. It is a must have for game night. Many online merchants offer great deals on them also.

Many combination game tables come in 3 in 1 styles. Some are used for playing poker, bumper pool and dining. Others have air hockey, foosball, ping pong, table tennis, soccer, billiards, glide hockey and bowling. Some table top combination game tables have checkers, chess, shuffle board, cribbage, dice football, dominos, nine men morse, tic tac toe, solitaire; playing cards.

One of the most popular combination game table sets among kids is the air hokey and foos ball. The games can be found for as low as $200.00 or cheaper. They come in many styles, colors and sizes. Some of the top brands include Bonzini, Deutscher Meister, Dynamo, Futbolin, Garlando, Goodtime novelty, Great American, Harvard, Tornado; Tournament Soccer. No matter if you are a child or adult, there are many combination game tables available to suit what you are looking for, from air hokey to bumper pool.

How to Repair a Pool Table

Friday, August 21st, 2009
Greg Dennely asked:

ightest blemish on a pool table surface can cause all sorts of problems. Nothing is more disheartening to the professional pool player than making a really good shot and watching the trajectory of the ball be altered by a tiny tear or gap in the surface fabric.

Before your friends, neighbors, or patrons begin tearing their hair out, know that you can easily take care of this. Patching the cloth will not work; you are going to have to resurface the entire table! Don’t be concerned, this is a fairly simple one man job that’s not too expensive.

The felt cloth can be found on line, from a billiards supply store, and even at some fabric stores. The billiard supply stores will have championship quality felt. This cloth is available in a variety of different colors and is usually bought by the square yard. The billiard supply store will know exactly how many square yards you need, so you need to take your measurements. Because of the drop on the sides for the bumpers and the fact you will be stretching the cloth and attaching under the rails, add at least 12 inches on each side of the surface dimensions.

The next step is to remove the old cloth. This should be fairly easy and how it is attached will depend on the table backing. Wood backed tables use staples and slate tables most commonly are glued.

Take off the side rails and lay your new felt completely across the table pulling it tight lengthwise. If you are resurfacing a wood backing begin stapling the felt under the rails in the middle first on one side. Place a staple about every 4 inches. When you reach a corner, stop and go to the next corner. Stretch the felt tight and begin stapling the opposite side. Make sure the surface is smooth.

If you have a slate backed table you will need a good spray adhesive. Spray the adhesive on the table about five inches from the edge of the table. Spray some more adhesive on the underside of the cloth. Wait about a minute for the glue to become tacky and press the felt down. Follow the same procedure as with the staples, doing one side first and then the opposite side.

After you have the sides finished and the table completely covered over, use a razor blade tool to make little holes where the rails bolt down onto the table. This will keep the bolts from making tears that could become worse when you tighten down the rails. Cut from the backside of the felt.

Pull back the pocket lining which is sometimes leather for example, and pull the felt down at the pockets and glue or staple. Then cover with the pocket lining and reattach for a finished job.

As it’s really quite difficult to move pool tables around, most repairs are usually made on location. When you resurface your pool table alone, you’ll save hundreds of dollars over a professional service.

Slate Repair.

You might find a need to make repairs to slate seams and cracks in your pool table. A great time to do this is while the felt is off when you are recovering the table. Billiard beeswax is a special wax that contains resin and hardens more than normal beeswax. This wax dries very hard and yet has enough flexibility to move with the table. Using a small torch, melt the wax and let it drip into the seam or crack. Use a paint scraper or putty knife to remove any excess wax. For larger cracks a slate patch is necessary.

Fun Game Tables and the Life Lessons they can Teach your Children

Tuesday, August 18th, 2009
MJ Marks asked:

In today’s world, as parents, we need to make an extra effort to keep our kids active and to teach them to interact with other people face to face. This is something that parents used to do without giving it much thought. But today, many youth spend a lot of time watching TV or playing video games. Many of the interactive games they play online keep them sedentary and anonymous. A lot of the communication comes through online chat, games and texting instead of face to face. There are many things that parents can do to help their children in these two areas, but one solution to both problems, that your kids will enjoy, are game tables. These fun game tables come in many forms, so you can find something that the whole family can enjoy. Let’s take a look at some of the options available.

The air hockey table has been around since the 1970’s. This great game was an instant hit and quickly appeared in homes around the country. It only took a few years before it became competitive with world championships. A miniature version of actual hockey, the puck floats atop a layer of air that is blown through holes on the table top. You score by hitting the puck into your opponents goal. Though the concept is simple, there is also much skill that is employed in the top levels of the sport. This is a fast action game that people of all ages can enjoy. It is highly competitive and will have your kids returning over and over again, keeping them very active.

Foosball makes for very fun game tables and have been around since the mid-twentieth century. A table top version of soccer, it is also very competitive. It can be played with two players or in teams of two for a total of four players. This allows more people to interact at a time.

Pool tables have been around for a couple of hundred years and offer a myriad of games that can be played. You can play games that involve anywhere from two to many players. Though not as active as the previous two games, it is great for having fun and interacting with other people.

Of all the fun game tables out there, one of my favorite is table tennis. This game can be very active and can be enjoyed by players of all experience. You can play one-on-one, with pairs, or around-the-world which can involve as many players as you wish. Though around-the-world starts out slow, it definitely picks up pace as people drop out of the game.

If you cannot decide which table is best for your family, or each member has a different opinion, then you should go for the All-in-1 fun game tables. A variety of number of games can be available in different tables, but some of the higher quality tables have two or three games. These types usually involve tables that flip over, with a different game on each side. Such as pool on one side and air hockey on the other (a pockey table!). Most will at least include a third game, usually by placing a removable table top onto the pool side, you then have ping pong. Other tables will have up to 10 games, but a majority of them are smaller games like backgammon and poker, not active games as we have discussed.

It is obvious that any of these games will allow your kids to be more active, but it also encourages great personal interaction between the players, and as an added bonus it promotes good sportsmanship. So if you would like to teach your kids some of these essential skills in life, then an investment in any of these fun game tables could be just what you need.

Pool table room size

Tuesday, August 18th, 2009
George Pennwood asked:

So you want a pool table in your home, which one do you get and most importantly have you thought about the room size you need to put it in? You see it’s all well and good to think that yes a 7 foot table will fit in that room nicely, but have you considered the room needed for actually playing the shots with full size pool cues? Remember pool cues are generally 57 inches long or 145 cms so ideally you will have to add 2 x 60 inches to each dimension of the pool table, to give a comfortable space to actually play the game.

Actually its not as bad as it seems as the playing area for a 7 ft full sized English pool table is 6 ft x 3 ft, so the actual room size you need is 16 ft x 13 ft if you are using full size cues and you could even get away with a smaller room say 13 ft square by using a short pool cue of 3 ft or so if the cue ball was on or near the cushion at one end of the room.  And for a six foot table the playing area is only 5 ft x 2 ft 6 inches, so the ideal room size would be 15 ft x 12 ft 6 inches. These dimensions are for proper slate bed pool tables like you find in the pubs and pool halls. Obviously for the American pool tables, the dimensions are larger, for an 8 ft American table, the room size would need to be 17 ft x 13 ft 6 inches and a 9 ft table needs a room size of 18 ft x 14 ft minimum.

So you could fit a pool table even in a relatively small room with a bit of imagination and a couple of short cues, I would recommend getting a piece of graph paper to work out the pool table room size you need before you part with your cash.

How many pool tables can 1-person open ?

Thursday, August 13th, 2009
WAYNE M asked:

I’ve asked this question before and I’m hoping for a better answer. For example: In the Advanced Room someone had opened 250 tables (under the name “dreampool rocks1-20″) and you cannot even choin that table to play. It’s almost like the person is “spamming” the room. Can anything be done about this? Yahoo has one of the best web sites for games, very enjoyable. But why should people like myself have to suffer just because someone has nothing better to do with their time. The answer I had gotten back before was, “just go to another room”. Well I found that answer very unprofessionel, and I’m looking forward to your response. Thank You
