Been too china a feew times and notices when you drive sown the road many people have pool tables on their front yard. What’s with that?
Sorry I should have checked my typing. What I meant to say is that I have been to China a few times (Schenzen) and it seems like on every other house, they have a pool table outside. It’s the weirdest thing.

Pool Table Lighting - Billiard Pendant or Island Pendant Lighting

Wednesday, April 28th, 2010
Craig Tucker asked:

Most people think that the pool table is the center piece to their pool room or family den. Wrong! A pool table is a pool table is a pool table, until it’s properly lit. The center piece to a pool room is the light above the pool table. Unless you are Ray Charles, you probably can’t play pool in the dark, and you certainly can’t play pool when you have shadows interfering with the playing field.

Pool room lighting or billiard room lighting is the finishing touch that sets off and displays your pool table. Until then it’s a piece of furniture. Like dry toast without the jam. That beautiful 3 light Tiffany Island Pendant or Tiffany Oblong Pendant that hangs above the playing surface is what makes or breaks your pool table area.

Bottom Line: What you choose for your pool room lighting becomes the center piece of your pool room.

Ok pool shark let’s slow down and consider some important things about your lighting options. There are a few things to take into consideration and taking some time to do a little homework will result in years of enjoyment for your family and friends. As well as add beauty, style and personality to this favorite part of the house and/or pool table setting.

First, I am going to assume that you have looked at the ceiling above your pool table and considered that there is someplace for the lighting system to hang from. Some pool tables, and Billiard Tables take up a lot of real estate.  Second, is it properly wired  or can it be properly wired so that the lighting can be centered, and third, high enough to allow your new 3 light Tiffany Island Pendant or Tiffany Oblong Billiard Pendant to hang approximately 30″ to 32″ above the pool table playing surface.

You want to make sure that your new Island or Billiard lighting system illuminates up to the edge of the pool table. If it is to high the lights will interfere with your eyes, if it is to low the lights can be damaged by an erratic pool ball, cue stick or your head. Most systems work well with 60 watt bulbs, however depending on the setting and pool table shape or size, 40 watt bulbs might work just as well.

Now comes the exciting part, choosing the lighting system.

The two best  lighting styles to consider is an Island Pendant (either 2 light or 3 light) or Billiard Pendant (Oblong Pendant). From here the choice is yours and depends on your taste. Right now you are probably still reeling from the pool table center piece thing but trust me the right lighting will turn a nice piece of furniture into a beautiful pool table.

I have been mentioning Tiffany Style Lighting for a reason.  Nothing says pool room faster then a beautiful 3 light Tiffany Island Pendant or Tiffany Billiard Pendant. Here is the difference between the two.

 - Island Pendant - Ceiling fixture usually multi-shaded, horizontally hung and generally best suited for a kitchen island, bar, pool table or above a counter top.

 - Billiard Pendant - Single shade ceiling fixture usually 30″ or longer in length, horizontally hung and generally best suited for a bar, den or pool table.

So you can see either one will work well for lighting your pool room.  Tiffany Oblong Pendants are very popular since you can get them in so many different themes. If you also love to Sport Fish, Golf, Hunt, Fly, play Baseball or any other sport you choose,  companies like the Meyda Tiffany Company has Oblong Pendants with those types of themes. Or you can choose a slogan like Budweiser, Coca Cola, Cheers, or Billiards. From simple to complex and beautiful , nothing says Pool Room like a Tiffany Billiard Pendant or Oblong Pendant.

If you would like to go in a different but just as functional direction, consider an Tiffany Island Pendant. Either a 2 light system or 3 light system.  Many Island Pendants also come in themes or slogans or just simple styles.  They are a little more versatile simply because at some point if you want to change to different shades it’s as easy as buying new shades with a different theme, style or slogan. Either one properly set and lit will have the same results.

A wonderful time and the potential for lot’s of shark bait!

Cost can be a major factor in choosing either style of lighting. Fortunately there is a price range for everyone interested in these pool room lighting styles. The cost for either style starts as low as a $100. Tiffany Pendants in this price range use a less substantial material and they won’t offer  the finer crisper beauty of the more expensive pendants, however they can be just a functional and the savings might be worth it. On the higher side you can pay $500, $1000 up to $2000 and more. Of course you get what you pay for. These expensive lamps are truly beautiful and will capture and hold the gaze of anyone looking at them.

When you choose to buy a Tiffany Island Pendant or Tiffany Billiard Pendant for your poolroom or Billiard room and you take your time in choosing, you are guaranteed to love, cherish and enjoy this beautiful product for years to come.

Additional Tips:

 - Room lighting Placement: 30 - 32 inches above your pool table

 - Room Color Scheme: Darker walls work best and help the table and lights stand out once your pool room is finished.

 - Neon Signs give your pool room that pool room feel.

 - Smaller lights and wall sconces can be placed around the edges of the room to set the mood.

 - Consider dimmer switches to obtain a soft, warm relaxing and comfortable setting.

 - Recessed lighting works wonders

 - The light over the pool table should be the brightest light in the room.

 - And while it probably doesn’t need to said, place the length of the light in the same direction as the length of the table

It’s Not Just Tiffany, It’s You!

Pool Table Cleaning, 7 Steps You Got to Do Before the Pope Comes Over

Friday, April 23rd, 2010
Sid Green asked:

Hey, don’t let your pool table love die out! You never know when the Pope will be dropping by to shoot some stick, and for occasions like these you want your table in pristine playing condition. Ok Maybe not the pope, but it sure is embarrassing when your pool table is turning your game into joke in front of friends (Insert mocking laughter here, Ha!).

So, I’ll let you in on seven small cleaning steps that if carried out regularly (best if right after your playing session) will keep your pool table in optimal playing condition; so everyone will be begging to come over to play on your beloved table.

1. All Balls Out

Take the balls out of the pockets and give them a wipe down with a cloth that is preferably 100% cotton. Put them away in there holding unit where they’re not going to be exposed to dust.

Having clean balls let’s them roll freer without the interference of dirt; plus you save any further transference of dust and dirt from the balls to the table.

2. Clean the Hanging Lights.

If you decked out your pool table room with a cool hanging light, then dust it off with a damp rag.

This little tip will save your table from dropping debris in the case someone clumsy taps it with their stick in all the excitement.

3. Now the Railings

Get the railings next with a dry rag, pushing all dust and debris onto the ground. This can be swept up later or vacuumed

4. Now the Table Surface

The most important part, the table felt. Take your pool brush ( you do have one, don’t you? ) and brush the debris and dust towards the corner pockets. I like to work the table in four sections and really do a good sweep.

5. Pocket Clean

With the dust flying through the pockets, you’ll want to take a damp rag and wipe up the inside and outside well; get all the debris.

6. Polish the Wood

This is more of an optional step, and only really needs to be carried out every other week or once a month. Use a good wood polisher to retain and beautify its finish; Trust me, it looks real slick afterwards.

I recommend using polish that’s made of natural oils and is eco friendly – check out “Earth Frindly Olive and Orange Oil Furniture Polish”

7. Shields Up

Because your pool table’s felt is sensitive to sitting dust, cover it up with a pool table cover so that its exposure is minimized.

There you have it! Seven steps that keep your pool table fresh and clean, so your 8ball shot to the corner pocket is smooth like butter.

I would like it to be in Orange County, CA and I would like it to be a nice venue. No whole in the wall places. A place big enough to fit 15-20 people.

Understanding the Bumper Pool Tables to Get the Best Deal

Saturday, April 10th, 2010
Nicky Meintjies asked:

Even though most people enjoy a game of pool every now and then, not everybody can get a pool table of their own. Even if you can afford to pay for it, you will have to see if you have the space to house the table. If this sounds like your case than a bumper pool table may be just be the thing that you are looking for. They are smaller than the normal pool table at 32 inches wide and 48 inches long .They are not as heavy as the other larger tables. The average weight is 300 pounds but it may vary depending on the material used.

The Bumper pool table is the prefect option for people who enjoy playing pool but live in an apartment and don’t have the separate space to accommodate the pool table. This is a very versatile table, which can easily double as a dining table. So when you are in the mood for a pool game, you can just remove the table cloth and your table will be ready. There are various types of bumper tables available in the market. Ones that can be converted into dining table when not in use and others which can be used as card tables for Poker nights. This table gives you value for your money and don’t hog the space like a normal table does.

Don’t let the smaller size fool you though, there is absolutely no difference in the features of a bumper pool table and a normal pool table. The edges are cushioned and raised just like a normal pool table, ensuring a good ball return system. The quality of the materials used in the construction of this table is very good. The wood used for the structure and the top are very sturdy and easy to clean. No wonder that the bumper pool tables are more popular than the regular pool tables, particularly with home users.

Also there is a wide range of models to choose from in bumper tables. Each has its own set of features. Even the prices are fairly competitive, starting at $300 and going up to $1000. The price will depend on the manufacturing brand and the raw materials used. But just like anything else, buying a bumper pool table should also involve some research. Take a look at all the options available before you choose one. Also check out the features, benefits and customer reviews of every model that you like. Your pool table should have all the features offered by bumper pool tables and it should also be sturdy enough to handle years of usage.

Unfortunately there are many sports good stores that only keep a limited number of bumper pool tables, so your options may be limited if you decide to shop at one of these stores. Instead you could always shop online. The best part about buying a bumper pool table over the internet is that you don’t have to worry about the shipping costs. Usually the website will take care of it for you. However, don’t forget to check the return policies, suppose if you find something amiss in your table you definitely don’t want to incur the cost of sending it back.

Another thing to look for in your bumper pool table is the warranty. Whether you buy it online or from a local sports good store, a warranty will secure your investment. Even though the cost of a bumper pool table is nearly half of a regular table doesn’t mean that you have to compromise on the quality of the product. So make sure that you go for a brand that offers not only quality but also commitment incase something goes wrong with the product.

Aramith Are High-Quality Pool Table Balls

Friday, April 2nd, 2010
arizonapool asked:

They’re not just your dad’s plain old billiards balls anymore. When it comes to pool table balls, you now have lots of styles from which to choose. Did you know that the billiards balls you use have a great influence on your game? So, what do you look for in quality billiards balls?

Billiards balls are judged along seven criteria: balance, density, brilliance, color, precision, diameter tolerance and surface polish. Almost 80% of all the pool table balls manufactured world-wide are Aramith balls, made by Saluc which is located in a small Belgium village. Because they are both The United States Professional Poolplayers Association’s and The American Poolplayers Association’s billiards ball of choice, Aramith balls are exclusively used in all of their tournaments.

Although the consistently of the roundness of your billiards balls is important, what’s most important are the raw materials used to manufacture the balls. These raw materials affect the density and balance of the ball, right down to its molecular structure. When the density is inconsistent, your ball will play erratically; i.e., inconsistent banking, missed shots, random positioning and zigzagging. That weird play you may have experienced on some tables might not be the table’s fault at all! Aramith uses phenol resin to manufacture their billiards balls. The Aramith Premier Pool Balls are the most cost effective and are for the casual pool player. The Premier is the most popular because you get the most value for your money. The Aramith Premium Pool Balls are a little more expensive because their surface polish and density are even harder, which will increase their longevity. The Aramith Pro Cup Pool Balls are the best in the world, and are the kind used in most tournament play.

Because they’re built to outlast the less expensive pool table balls, it really is true – you get what you pay for. In the long run, you’ll even come out ahead when you purchase phoenix billiards balls; not only do they last a lifetime, they won’t rough up your pool table cloth like the cheaper billiards balls will, saving you the cost of a cloth replacement.

In addition to traditional billiards balls, Aramith also makes decorative balls. For example, the Great White Shark set looks like sharks are swimming across your arizona pool table. If you’re a competitor, you’ll enjoy the Camouflage set, “Because pool is combat.” Or, if you’re introducing your children to the game, order the Disney set.

Buyer beware: Since Aramith balls are some of the very best, other sellers will try to fool you into thinking their balls are Aramith balls by printing “Belgium” on the packaging. When you purchase your Aramith pool table balls from us, you can be assured you’re getting the real deal. And, no matter which style of billiards balls you choose for your phoenix pool table, don’t forget the pool ball cleaner!

All about Pool Tables

Thursday, April 1st, 2010
Steve Porter asked:

Pool tables are coming back in vogue again with different more contemporary styles and different coloured cloths, basically any colour you want.

And the more contemporary table designs  make them more pleasing to the eye. A well crafted pool table is still a beautiful thing although a tad bulky. Allow for the cue action whilst planning a den when you select a table and allow an extra 10 ft on the width and length to cater for playing with a cue. So if you have a 6 foot table your room size will have to be sixteen feet by 13 ft to give space all around the pool table to manipulate the cue,  seventeen feet by 14 feet for a 7 ft table etc.

Pool Tables vary in price too. They are priced from $50 for small models or up to $10000 for the more exotic versions and the determining factor is the bed, which can be wood or hard rock (slate). The MDF tables are mostly for kids although there are some very nice wood topped tables that can come in 7 ft sizes, large enough for even dad to play on and not as expensive as the slate table top versions.

Proper pool tables are slate bed tables, no wooden topped table will have the same playing characteristics as one made with slate. Slate can be anything from ½ inch to 1 ½ inches thick allowing for the type or model of table. Of course they weigh more than MDF tables. Depending on the size of the table the slate is made from one or up to 3 separate parts, to save carrying weight when installing the table. The one piece slate table is easy to put together, the multi slate tables should always be installed by professionals as they can be tricky to line up right.

The pool table bases also come in a variety of materials from the traditional types made of solid timber or MDF to the brick outhouse style of steel tables made to stand up to the hurley burley of pool club life. The table to go for is up to you, with the wood or MDF tables for domestic use and the steel and aluminium framed tables are made for the clubs. The aluminium and steel tables  also lend themselves to garish outer decoration which you can see in the arcades especially but tables made for home tend to be straightforward stained oak or mahogany.

There are many different games played on pool tables .  Carombole, which is played in France mostly, is one of the classic billiards games  played for points scored by hitting either or both of the other balls on the table which has NO pockets. The more common tables do have pockets, and the most popular games are 8 ball and 9 ball, with 8 ball you have to pocket your 7 balls and then the number 8 ball, and with 9 ball you have to pocket the number 9 ball to win.

Pool tables have a long history and are part of the larger family of billiard tables which have been around for a few hundred years and include snooker, carom and pool tables, and I’m sure they will be around for a few more hundred years as the game can be played by anyone and if you get really good at it you can earn a very decent living on the professional playing circuit.
