Choosing The Right Pool Table Design

Thursday, May 13th, 2010
Matt Jackson (bullz) asked:

A pool table can be much more than a games table for playing pool or billiards; some of the best designs fit perfectly into any home or room and make the perfect addition to the decor of a property. The use of proper hardwood and high grade materials, as well as elegant table design, ensures that you will get almost as much pleasure out of looking at the table and showing it off to others as you will get from playing on it. Modern pool table design also offers a wide variety of colours, styles, and materials for you to choose from.

Budget

As with any major purchase, budget is likely to be an issue when choosing pool table design. Authentic, traditional pool tables offer a unique look but because they considered antiques and typically use much thicker slate and other materials in their construction they can prove prohibitively expensive. Not only are they expensive to purchase but the added weight means that they are equally difficult and costly to move and remove. Modern pool tables are available in authentic, incredible designs but at a fraction of the cost and weight.

Size

Size matters when it comes to choosing a billiard table for your home. Regulation pool tables are 9 foot in length and half that size in width but pool tables are also available in 7’ and 8’ designs. The 8’ design offers a very good combination that is easier to fit in the home while being very close to regulation size. Regardless of table length, any pool table should always be twice the length of its width to offer an authentic game of pool or billiards.

Slate Or Non-Slate?

One of the big decisions that people often face when choosing a pool table is whether to opt for a slate table or non-slate table. In reality, this isn’t a question of aesthetic design and to even the most amateur pool player, there is no question that slate tables offer a much better game. Slate tables are heavier and can be more expensive but they will last considerably longer and offer uniformity in the roll of the ball that is not offered by any slate substitute material. This is the reason that everybody from the novice to the purist would ideally choose a slate table.

Felt

One aspect of pool table design that matters both in terms of aesthetics and quality of play is the cloth, or felt that is used. A good quality felt should be thick and made with a tight weave in order to properly cover the playing surface but modern felts are available in virtually any colour so you can really let your design side come out when choosing a pool table for your house. Not all pool tables include the felt when you buy them so be cautious when you pick your table that you know whether you need to purchase felt separately or not.

Design Styles

Design styles range from ultra modern and sleek to traditional and authentic and materials used for the construction of the legs and the frame can vary from lesser quality MDF to high quality hardwoods, oak, cherry, and walnut. The decision of style and material will largely be down to your personal preference but with such a wide variety available you shouldn’t have problems finding the billiard table design that is just right for you.

Get The Most From Your New Billiards Table

Wednesday, May 12th, 2010
Matt Jackson (bullz) asked:

Modern billiards tables can come in a wide range of different shapes, sizes, and designs and with reasonable care and attention they should last for many years to come. By choosing the best table, covering it when not in use, and cleaning the cloth and wood at regular intervals you can help ensure that your new billiard table continues to look its best and keeps offering the best playing experience possible for you, your family, and guests whenever you want a quick game.

Choose The Right Table

Choosing the right table is the first step to a lifetime of enjoyment. There are a number of aspects to consider. While the felt and even the rails, although to a lesser extent, can be replaced if necessary in the future, the bed of the table and the actual legs and frame are considerably more expensive and more difficult to replace. For this reason, you should concentrate on finding billiard tables that use the best materials.

Slate Bed Or Non Slate Bed

Slate bed isn’t just considered the best material because of how well it plays but because it will last a lifetime. Where wood and synthetic materials can become damaged even through regular but normal use, slate will not bend, chip, splinter, or warp even following just regular use and a number of people leaning across the table to play long shots. Even liquid spillage will have a considerably less damaging effect, as it will run off the slate without warping.

Table Material

The material used for the construction of the table legs and frame is as important as the choice of bed material. A sub-standard frame will not be able to take the weight of regular use and will certainly struggle under the weight of a good 1” thick slate bed. In contrast, the use of hardwood provides a strong and robust frame and support for the table and users as well as incredible looking designs that you can’t get in MDF or synthetic materials.

Caring For The Felt

The cloth is an important part of the billiard table and while you can pay to have a table recovered, doing so on a regular basis will mean that the cost will soon add up. To negate the need to do this, you should look after the felt as much as possible. If your table included a felt cloth then you should use this before and after playing to remove any dirt or other debris that might get caught and rip or otherwise damage the cloth.

Covering Your Table

Another method of felt care is to add an opaque pool table cover when it is not in use. The cover sits over the top of the table and prevents dust and dirt from getting in. A coloured cloth that doesn’t allow the light to get through will also prevent the felt from discolouring under bright lights.

Choosing A Billiard Table That Will Last A Lifetime

Strong slate bed tables can be used regularly and routinely for playing any form of pool or billiards. They’re strong enough to safely take the weight of a player leaning over to play long shots and they are even resilient to atmospheric changes. Damp, extreme cold and warm conditions will not have the same detrimental effect on a slate table as they would on a wooden table or a synthetic one.

A Buyer’s Guide To Pool Tables

Wednesday, May 12th, 2010
Matt Jackson asked:

As with any major purchase buying pool tables means finding the right item at the right price. However, where pool tables can be considered quite unique is in the fact that they are usually considered for their aesthetic appeal as well as for their usefulness and quality as a pool table. The size of a pool table means that it will usually be the main focal point in any room where it is placed so it is understandable that one needs to look good as well as provide the best playing quality possible.

Pool Table Size

Pool tables for the home tend to be either 7’, 8’, or 9’ in length and half that in width. While a 9 foot table is considered to be regulation size, it is also very large and many people find it difficult to fit the table in their home billiards room. An 8’ table, on the other hand, allows for it to be fitted in your billiards room and allows room for you to take your shots while being very close to regulation size.

The Cost Of Your Billiard Table

Good 8 foot pool tables can range in price right up to $3,000 or $4,000 for a branded table but you can get an equally good table for around $2,000 or less. The actual price you pay will be dependent on a number of factors including size, materials, design, and whether you opt for a slate or non-slate bed but you can enjoy the best looking designs constructed from high quality materials for under $2,000.

Pool Table Design Styles

Consider the design of the room where your billiard table will go as well as the overall design of the house. Wooden tables are available in oak, cherry, and walnut and for the ultimate finish you can choose tables that have been lacquered so that they have the same quality of finish as a piece of high end furniture. You can also find black and other colours used in the design of modern pool tables you should easily be able to find a pool table that matches the room.

Felt Colour

As well as the traditional green pool table felt you can also find suppliers that offer alternative felt colours for your table. Virtually every conceivable colour can be added to the top of the table in order to create a unique and great looking piece of furniture that still offers a high quality game of pool.

Slate, Wood, Or Synthetic Pool Table Beds

Purists and regular players will tell you that the question of whether to buy slate or not really isn’t a question at all. Slate beds have several advantages over wooden or synthetic materials, although there are of course some downsides to the slate option as well. When compared to any other material, a slate bed offers a smoother shot and will continually provide straight shots and a cleaner run of the ball. It will also last a lot longer and will not become damaged or disfigured even with the most vigorous use. It is, however, more expensive and heavier than wood or synthetic alternatives.

A Pool Table Investment For Your Home And Family

An 8 foot pool table is a great investment for the home. It can be used as a large item of furniture thanks to its beautiful design and it will provide fun for the whole family and for visitors. A slate table made from high quality materials can last you many years so it’s important that you make the right choice when buying your new billiard table.

What are the different kinds of Pool Table Balls?

Monday, May 10th, 2010
Cillian asked:

Pool table balls are different from the balls used in other games. Pool is also known as pocket billiards in different countries. Pool is used to refer to a whole family of games that contain balls that have to be deposited in six pockets placed in the rails of the two sides of a table.

Carom billiards is used to refer to that kind of a cue sport where pocket less tables are used to play. If you are not in the cue sports industry, you would probably know the game as “pool”. This shows its unfortunate connection with gambling. One pocket, straight pool, nine pool and eight pool are some of the popular pool games.

Size of the Pool Balls

But if you think that you can use the same ball for both pool billiard and carom billiard, you are grossly mistaken. There are different equipments for both these games. For instance, pool table balls are smaller in size than carom billiards.

They range in the diameter of 2.25 inches to 2.375 inches. When you compare this size to the size of the ball used in carom billiards, you see that there the size ranges from 2.375 inches to 2.42 inches. The number of balls will vary according to the game of pool.

Numbers on the Balls

For instance, if the game being played is an Eight Ball, then there will be sixteen balls on the table. Out of this, you will see that there is one ball white and the rest fifteen colored balls. When you begin the game, the balls should be arranged in a neat triangular shape.

If this is the case in an Eight Ball, a Nine Ball consists of ten balls- nine colored and one white. When you begin the game, the balls should be present on the table in the form of a diamond shape.

Three Ball is a pool game that requires the least number of balls. It requires only four balls out of which three are colored and one is white. When you start a game of Three Ball, you should first arrange the three balls neatly in a triangular shape.

Snooker is another popular pool game that consists of 22 pool table balls. Out of these 15 are red, one is white and there are six other balls that are of different colors like black, pink, blue, brown, green and yellow.

This however does not mean that you cannot have your own number of pool table balls. The number of pool table balls can be increased or decreased with the kind of game that is being played.

Will A Conscious Intention Improve Your Pool Playing?

Wednesday, May 5th, 2010
Ernie Reynolds asked:

Will a conscious intention improve your pool playing?

I think it will. I know it does for me and others I have given this suggestion to. And I believe it will do the same for you.

I usually play pool on Friday nights. So, when I wake up on Friday morning I say to myself, “I intend to play excellent pool tonight.” I think it with conviction and with the belief that it is a true statement. And it usually comes true.

I do this first thing in the morning because, at that time, the mind is not fully into conscious mode yet. That small interval between being asleep and fully awake is the ideal time to make mental suggestions such as this. The intention to play pool well goes directly to the subconscious mind - that part of the mind that really controls our lives.

It would be similar to meditate to a very relaxed state and then intend to play your best pool. Or, have a hypnotist place you into a deep trance state and give you the post-hypnotic suggestion that you will now play the best pool of your life. When the mind and body are very relaxed the subconscious mind is more accessible and better able to take suggestions such as these.

As well as being a long-time pool player, I am a student of the mind. I have studied various philosophies about how the mind works and how it affects our daily living. I am certainly convinced that the mind and our outlook on life affect our health and well-being, as well as our pool playing.

A person who generally thinks positive, uplifting thoughts will certainly get more out of life than a person who is stuck in negativity and thinks the world is an unfair, depressing place. Although the world has a way of throwing curves at us, out thoughts and attitudes can make the difference between wanting to get up in the morning and grumbling our way out of bed.

One of my favorite sayings is, “Thoughts Become Things.” If you really think about this you will see that it is true. Any thing that mankind has created has first been a thought in someone’s mind. It couldn’t come about any other way.

If you see yourself as a good pool shooter, and really visualize it in your mind, eventually it will be so. Of course you need to put your time in on the pool table to learn the game and practice. But, with the right mindset and a firm intention, it will happen much faster and you will enjoy the game a heck of a lot more.

Another very helpful intention for playing pool could be “I intend to concentrate fully on the game.” If you have played much pool I’m sure you know that if you are not concentrating on the game at hand, you will not play your best pool. Pool is not a physically hard game, but it does take pretty intense concentration to avoid missing easy shots and playing up to your potential.

It has been said many times that pool is a “mental game.” Once you have the basics down and know your way around the pool table, whether you win or lose depends very much on your mental state. If you are in a relaxed state of mind and enjoying yourself you will play better. If you have things on your mind that are bothering you, you won’t play your best.

So, since most of us like to win when we play a game of pool, why not give yourself the best chance of wining? As an experiment, take a few seconds to make an intention to play excellent pool the next morning when you know you will be playing that day. You have nothing to lose and you may be pleasantly surprised at how well you play. Leave a comment on my blog and let me know if it worked for you - http://Pool-Is-Cool.com.

Thoughts become things. Make a thought of intention to play the best pool of your life the next time you hit the table. I’m willing to bet you will!
